What is testosterone & why is it important?
Testosterone is the hormone that develops and influences male & female sexual characteristics such as muscle mass, energy, fat consumption and metabolization, sexual desire, libido, and vitality. Testosterone also contributes positively to our mood, emotional and mental well-being, regulates anxiety and depression as it is a cortisol (stress hormone) fighter.
Testosterone regulates important body functions that affect the quality of life. Mental status, metabolic action, muscular development & maintenance, energy consumption (fat processing), sexual desire & performance are all affected negatively when testosterone is low.

Low Testosterone Symptoms
Dealing with low testosterone is like wading through quicksand. Often the frustration of struggling to go forward in life overwhelms the desire to improve, and we give up. Symptoms of low testosterone:
- Low energy
- Low sexual desire
- Erectile Dysfunction
- Weight gain
- Depression, mood swings, anxiety
- Mental haze
- Poor focus
- Irritability
Often, if we experience symptoms long enough, they become the status quo. They become normal and no longer considered symptoms. Ask someone close to you if any of these symptoms apply to you.

What Causes Low Testosterone?

What causes low testosterone?
Stress:
Our hormones govern our bodies eco system. Stressors to our body and mind cause hormonal imbalances as a self preservation reaction to stress – as testosterone production is taxing to the body, and our bodies like to conserve energy to survive the stressors. The end result is low testosterone.
Sex hormones such as testosterone, which is responsible for regulating sex drive (libido), bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass and strength, and the production of red blood cells and sperm are always the first hormones to be imbalanced as our bodies shut down its production in the self preservation effort. Our bodies cannot differentiate what kind of stress we are dealing with, and only know to shut down or decrease production.
Alcohol:
Alcohol consumption disrupts the synthesis of testosterone, and converts testosterone into estrogen. Prolonged alcohol consumption may cause the testicles to atrophy, in which testosterone production may have a permanent minimum output.
Age:
Generally, after the age of 25, men experience a decline in testosterone production. As men age, the production of testosterone declines further. Testosterone levels will not increase noticeably without intervention. Low testosterone also occurs in men & women before the age of 25.
